In memory of Len Seal
We were deeply saddened by the recent passing of our friend and former BRDT Trustee, Len Seal.
Len stood down from the Board last year after nearly ten years in the role, during which time he oversaw some significant changes, including the establishment of The HEAT Project, a BRDT initiative that came from an idea first suggested at a local Climate Café meeting.
Along with his wife Kay, he was behind setting up the Climate Café in Blairgowrie and Rattray – the second such group in the world – and the couple also helped to raise tens of thousands of pounds for Cancer Research UK by organising two Relay for Life events in Blairgowrie.
Len was also instrumental in setting up the Strathmore Cycle Network, which aims to link the towns of Blairgowrie, Alyth and Coupar Angus with cycle and walking friendly routes, and Tayside Woodlands Partnership, which continues to grow from strength to strength, and was a community councillor for several years.
He devoted most of his life to helping others, having worked in social care, the criminal justice system and child protection, and was a strong advocate on behalf of the climate and addressing the declared climate emergency.
After his retirement from professional life in 2008, Len continued to make a positive difference to people and the community in which he lived. The qualities of leadership that he demonstrated throughout his career – kindness, thoughtfulness, honesty, integrity, determination, an ability to listen, diplomacy, a wise counsel and a true champion of nature – transferred seamlessly to his involvement in and commitment to a range of community activities.
Len was a man who had a deep understanding of friendship, family and fellowship, and of connections and community.
His enthusiasm and calm, supportive manner made him perfectly suited to the role of mentor and guide at BRDT, and without question influenced people’s understanding of climate issues and helped the organisation achieve the local, regional and national recognition it now has.
All of us at BRDT are hugely grateful for everything he has done to make Blairgowrie and Rattray a better place to live, we miss him greatly and our thoughts are with his family and friends.
