Big-hearted members of Rattray Bowling Club donated £400 to the town’s ‘Loo Crew’ recently.

The money was raised for the Loo Crew – a team of more than a dozen volunteers who run the public toilets in Blairgowrie and Rattray after saving the facilities from closure two years ago.

An estimated 15,000 people have used the public toilets in the Wellmeadow since they were taken on by the dedicated volunteers who were determined that Perthshire’s largest town would continue to provide a much-valued service.

Supported by Blairgowrie and Rattray Development Trust (BRDT), which leases the premises from Perth and Kinross Council (PKC), and a number of local businesses and organisations including Blairgowrie-based Castle Water Ltd and Graham Environmental Services, and Stagecoach, the ‘Loo Crew’ manage and run the important amenity.

Graeme Lawrence is social convenor for Rattray Bowling Club. He said: “It’s very important for all of us at Rattray Bowling Club to support our community, and after hearing about the maintenance costs involved in running the public toilets in the town, we decided to donate the proceeds of our annual quiz night to the Loo Crew.

“Having public toilets is so important to a town like Blairgowrie, they’re a real asset and so we wanted to support the volunteers and BRDT - they’re doing a great job looking after them.”

As well as receiving the donation from Rattray Bowling Club, the team of Loo Crew volunteers who entered the quiz were also delighted to win on the night.

Deborah Roger from the Loo Crew said: “We’re incredibly grateful to Rattray Bowling Club for holding the quiz night and for donating the proceeds to the Loo Crew.

“It was a great night, well attended, very well organised and really good fun - and winning the quiz was a real bonus!”

BRDT is a community-led organisation that works towards combining community-led action with an enterprising approach to addressing and tackling local needs and issues and creating social, economic and environmental strength in the town. It is a registered charity with community membership and is supported by a wider network of Scottish organisations.

Stuart Nichol from BRDT added his thanks to Rattray Bowling Club, commenting: “Securing the public toilets as an asset for Blairgowrie and Rattray is a great example of how BRDT can support our community to make a positive difference for those who live, work and visit our town.

“We’re hugely appreciative of all the businesses and community organisations – including Rattray Bowling Club - that have raised funds and made donations towards supporting this vital service.

“We couldn’t do any of what we do without the support of our community and the hundreds of volunteers whose efforts make this town what it is.

“Thank you to everyone at Rattray Bowling Club for this generous donation and for a wonderful evening at the quiz night – and congratulations to the winning Loo Crew team!”
